 A Long Way Down Essay

Suicide and humor happen to be two words and phrases not often linked to each other, yet Nick Hornby takes the pair in in his book A Long Way Straight down, a darker comedy about suicide and life after having a failed make an effort. The book is told about by 4 characters acquiring turns informing the story in their voice. The resulting hodgepodge gang contains Martin, a quasi superstar who manages to lose everything following an affair with a fifteen-year old woman; Maureen, the middle-aged mom of a seriously disabled son; Jess, an obnoxious adolescent living recklessly to avoid her reality of a missing sister; and JJ, the American and aiming musician having found himself lonely and alone in britain. This unexpected group fulfills on New Year's Eve on the roof with the well-known suicide spot Topper's House, where each moved separately while using intention of ending all their lives. The four consent to at least postpone their very own plans once they realize they'd be you try to invest front of your crowd. Becoming a sort of support system for each other, the characters start the process of finding out what led them up onto the top that fateful evening. Ninety days after Matn, Maureen, Jess, and JJ first came across each other, they return to the roof to take inventory of the previous three months and locate that each one of these is ready to try to restore or reconstruct their lives. A Long Way Down's decidedly expected ending is catagorized short using its lack of creativeness but does illustrate the novel's motif that in sharing one common feeling of give up hope people may bring some little bit of hope to each other. With a chat about a Ferris wheel inside the distance, Matn, Maureen, Jess, and JJ's adventure leads to the same way it began, on top of Topper's Residence. Closing the book, Matn asks if the Ferris tyre is really moving, to which Maureen muses, " It failed to look like it was shifting, but it should have been, I actually suppose" (Hornby 333).
